CLO's Lifelong Learning for Literacy Practitioners

Core Skills

Deaf, Francophone and Native Literacy Streams

The Anglophone literacy stream, represented by the sectors, is only one of four literacy streams in Ontario. Ontario also has a Deaf, Francophone and Native literacy streams. The four literacy streams in Ontario represent the four distinct cultures whose needs must be met by the literacy field.

Only the Anglophone sector (which represents 90% of program delivery in Ontario) received funding for MTCU's Practitioner Training Strategy. As such, core skill lists were not developed for the Deaf, Native and Francophone streams as part of the Practitioner Training Strategy. Nonetheless, practitioners in each of these streams are highly skilled and also heavily involved in practitioner training. Each stream is represented by a provincial umbrella organization which provides a wide variety of training opportunities and resources to their member programs.
